About the detectives

Detective Inspector Mark Carlton

At 26 years old, Mark Carlton is the youngest Detective Inspector at Scotland Yard. This was due in no small part to his stunning detecting mind, which has led him to have an unheard of, unblemished record in his cases. It is certainly not due to his arrogant mind and quick temper, which has rightly made him many enemies over the years.

When first partnered with his colleague River, he hated her, thinking it was demeaning to his position to have to drag a "newbie" around with him. However, he was gradually impressed by her intuition and judge of character which helped him to solve their first case together. Now, they work together, bickering and solving cases in equal measures.

Detective Sergeant Katherine "Kathy" River

Kathy River never thought she would become a detective, but after working with Carlton on their first case she decided to join the force to work alongside him. She is an expert in psychology and human nature, and it is this, combined with her patiently tolerant nature, enables her to see through Carlton's bickering to the incredible mind beneath.

River is an instantly likeable character, who is excellent at putting suspects at ease. One of her finest skills is her ability to tell when people are lying, through a mixture of confidence, natural skill and psychological study. This, understandably, has become very useful throughout her time as a detective.

NB - for those of you who have followed River from the start, you may have been aware that she was originally named "Kate". I changed her nickname to "Kathy", as I felt it suited her better. I thought it gave her a more comforting, homely sense to her, rather than the more abrupt and boy-ish "Kate". Comments?
